IRONSTONE

The brown and blue vein ironstone block available from the historic quarry at Great Tew is without comparison.  A unique British supply, dating back several hundred years, of large dimensional block offers unlimited opportunity to the masonry and volume processor with consented reserves of over 15 years supply.  Indeed, some of the block now being quarried is over 30 tonnes and require splitting several times in situ with our multi-mast Marini drill rig.

Technically, the stone is known in geological terms as the Marlstone Rock Bed and comprises much of the Middle Lias strata sandwiched between the Upper and Lower Lias clays of the Jurassic age.  The Marlstone Rock Bed is about 7-8 meters think with the best block stone recovered from the upper 6 meters of strata in two to three seperate beds.

Examples of work undertaken in ironstone are numerous and diverse – indeed across the country, if the stone work is ironstone it is safe to assume that the raw material came from Great Tew.  For further information about Great Tew ironstone or to discuss your particular project requirements please contact us.
